National Depression
For university youth at least.
It is here and you will feel it right after you step on a ground of any university campus in Singapore. It's quiet and it's tense. Like the silence before storm. The dark cloud of EXAMS has fallen.
I think I have never really felt school stress to such an extent, especially in getting good grades. Even my 48-hour studies for final exams do not qualify.
Here, it is almost 1 month before the exams that most of the students start disappearing to the endless corners of the libraries.. And believe me, all those corners are full of people with gloomy faces and tired faces (some are sleeping, their heads on the books).
Two of the things that I think are affecting the studies here for it to become so stressful:
- Expectations from the society around - family, friends, workplace etc - academic achievement is the basis for your future life.
- The grades tend to be given according to Bell curve. Even the very very good might not be good enough.
International students also need to maintain certain standards to keep their scholarships.
This pushes everyone's ambitions in becoming better and better. Not to mention that people really are taking university education very seriously and competetively, which is only enhanced by the fact that Singapore is continuously attracting the best scholars from all over the world to come and study here.
Yaah, such is life! Lots of strength my dear friends doing the exams right now!

Depression = a prolonged/contracted period of recession, usually following an unusually high rate of inflation and followed by a lower rate of inflation....
@_@... my eyeballs almost popped out reading a whole book of principle of econs in 2 days.
*Exhibit A of Triin's National Depression review on University exams. hahahaha... depressed laughter
Hey babe!! You can do it!!! : ) One more last time - your final exams.. and then can accompany me and other graduates in observations of students' behaviour : )
You'll miss all these once you leave student life. Trust me! :)
Kind of. Being graduate from June 2004, I think I miss most the carefree student lifestyle. Will get back to studies in 3 years' time in the latest, if the current plans apply : P
I love learning new things, but if it seems only for the best grades without true further meaning, I don't believe in it. Often hearing the comments on such things here in Singapore, I think things have got a bit too far.
